recently had a security system put on my home which uses wireless sensors. in less than a week, my remote controls for my digital cable box and tv are not working as they should. I have to be about a foot or so away from the cable box for it to work and when it does it only works for a few seconds. Replaced cable box remote with a new one and still the same thing. any help would be greatly appreciated on what to do or who to call.

cable and TVs user Infra-red remotes, that require Line-of-Site. Security systems use a wireless RF technology, so its completely unrelated. Possibly your security system could mess with your cordless phones, or wireless internet/networking, but your TV/cable can't be related.

what you are describing sounds like what can happen when the battery is low on the remote, or the sensors are partially covered... check and make sure you have new good name-brand batteries (duracell, energizer), and maby use a little windex on a paper towel on the front of the remotes, they usually have a extremely-dark red surface, that the transmitter hides behind, and clean it well... then find those surfaces on your TV & cable box and make sure there isn't anything in the way of them, and clean those with the towel/windex

Trying to stay below $ 400, I could do any wiring myself. I live in South Florida so it gets to be around 90 degrees on average. Just a standard resolution in color. Night vision would be a big plus but not needed. If it could be directed to the video input on a receiver that could work also. Would want it to store recordings.

Analog, composite video? There are lots.

On its own channel? Some RF modulators can be expensive, especially if you want to select the channel. Easier if you just use one of the other video inputs that are not in use.

What is your budget?
What resolution are you looking for?
Will the video need to be recorded and stored? If yes, what surveillance DVR are you looking at?
Only one camera?
Is night vision required? If yes, how far does the camera need to see in darkness?
Does the camera need to be outdoor rated?
Does it snow where you live? If yes, you may need a housing with a heater unit.
Does it get REALLY hot where you live? If yes, you might need a housing with a cooling system.
Is the video signal to be wired or wireless?
Is there power available where you plan to install the camera?
Is the camera going to stay in one position or is pan/tilt/zoom control required?

To find the best camera to fit your needs, the first step is to identify what purpose you intend the security camera to serve. For example, a camera to monitor general crowd movement is a much lower requirement than if you need a camera that can pinpoint a face in the crowd.

If the area you want to monitor is outdoors, there are requirements such as durability concerns that need to be address unlike an indoor security camera. There are factors such as weather and vandals that will test the durability of your camera.

The overall size of your security system, including the number of cameras you will need, will determine your spending ceiling. If it was just one camera you might spend a little extra for extra features, for example higher resolution. But across a 20 camera system that little extra you spend per camera will definitely add up to some serious money. Your budget will directly impact your buying decision and needs to be sufficient for the right cameras to adequately serve your needs.

The lighting in the area to be monitored by your security camera is another important consideration. A high quality camera designed for daytime use installed in a low light environment won't be able to render anything more than shades of black. If that is the case you will need flood lights or some other source of lighting in the area.

The resolution of a camera is the measure of image sharpness that the security camera can capture. A higher resolution camera can produce higher quality images. Lower end cameras come in resolutions of 330 lines and up while higher quality cameras have up to 400 lines.

When it comes to recording the video feed from the camera, most people will do with the DVR, which stands for digital video recorder. In more advanced monitoring systems there are controls for panning and zooming the camera in real-time to get closeups or follow a particular object.
